This sculpt I didn't plan too much. I knew I wanted something skeletal and more "Evil-Dead"or "Return of The Living Dead" instead of realistic, and it was going to be 1:1 full size bust and cast in resin. I have never cast a full size bust in resin before so this would be a learning process.
Roughed in the skeletal shape and pose, the teeth were made in super-sculpey and baked (I accidentally burned the sculpey which is why the teeth are black), the eyes are just some cheap plastic full scale doll eyes I found on ebay.
Unfortunately I don't have many sculpt in progress pics, so we'll have to skip ahead to the final sculpt:
On to mold-making, I use rebound 25 brush on silicone:
On the final layer of silicone I use a bunch of scrap silicone cubes to register to the mother mold and prevent sagging.
I was out of silicone and it was too thin for my liking, but it will have to do. I build the mother mold with ultracal and bandages. This proved to be a mistake as the final mold was ridiculously heavy. I had to build rotary frame out of 2/4's and hang it from the ceiling in my garage to enable me to roto-cast this enormous mold.
Here's the final resin cast painted:
Lessons learned:
1) There's no such thing as too subtle of texture, I should have softened the details a bit more.
2) Make sure you have extra silicone on hand, I did suffer some sagging issues around the seam because some areas were only 0.25" thick. Thankfully a zombie is forgiving of these imperfections.
3) Use fiberglass or plasti-paste for my large mother molds. Ultracal is too heavy, it's worth the extra money for a lighter method.
